How To Wear Cheap Jewelry...For A Long Time

19 January 2014

Today I want to share a little secret with you all. It's nothing monumental, and I'm sure some of you will know it already, it's just a quick trick so that everyone can have fabulous arm parties all year round. Making the world a better place over here!

I've always been a big fan of the Forever 21 jewelry section. It's accessory heaven (unless you visit at the weekend in which case it's most proabably just a mess). Walls of fabulous statement necklaces, bowl after bowl of on-trend bangles and so many rings that you can spend a good 30 minutes sifting through them all. Best of all, it's cheap. I mean, real cheap!

There's just one problem...

Anyone who has ever stepped foot in the store will be aware the quality is not exactly the greatest, pretty far from it in fact. I actually stopped buying their jewelry altogether for a while because I would wear it a handful of times and then it would be too tarnished and I'd have to just chuck it away. Cost Per Wear it was actually a terrible buy!

Then I found out about this easy trick so that you can keep wearing your $7.80 bracelets and your $3.60 bracelets again and again:

1. Get a clear nail polish - Needs to be reasonable quality and fairly new so it's not too thick.

2. Get a pair of tweezers.

3. Remove tags and lay out your new pretties on some paper or just the paper bag they came in.

4. Using your tweezers you can pick up lightweight items to get all sides. For larger items work in sections, flipping the item over when one side is dry to a gentle touch.

5. Once you've coated all the sides, allow the jewellery to fully dry (about 30 minutes should do it). If you've painted all sides at once be sure to let the item dry slightly (about 5 minutes) before setting it down on the paper to dry fully.

NOTE: This trick can make delicate chains get stuck. If you want to, you can gently sweep a very thin top coat over the sides of a chain to give it a little protection. It's not as good as if it were fully coated, but generally you'll find it protects most of the areas that touch your skin, which is how it gets tarnished in the first place. Just make sure you don't apply too much - test your technique on the chain by the clasp where it won't be visible if you're not sure!

If you're careful not to let it drip or run then your jewelry should look pretty much identical to how it looked before. Only difference is it will maintain it's color much, much longer and that 'bargain jewelry' will actually have been a bargain!

Isn't it such a simple, but brilliant trick, I feel like everyone needs to know this! Who else has tried this out for themselves?

Now you know, you can head over to the FOREVER21 ACCESSORIES section and stock up on jewels. They have an extra 30% off on their winter sale now too – ends 22/01.

Hope everyone's had a great weekend!

  1. ooh thanks for sharing, i do love Forever 21's jewellery. I've heard of this tip but never done it myself! xo

    1. You should give it a try, definitely helps prolong the wear of cheaper jewellery :) x

  2. This is so helpful, I always feel my topshop rings leave me with green fingers.

  3. oh wow this is a great idea and I actually have never thought about it!

  4. I always do this on my bargain rings from Topshop, such an easy way of increasing the longevity of cheap jewellery.

  5. This post is a really helpful one! Just wondering, do you paint the front of the ring too? x

  6. I've actually tried this out, and felt it did extend the life of my f21/H&M pieces. However, since they still didn't last as long as I'd like them to last, I've begun to only pick up pieces that are genuine silver/gold, or costume jewelry from vintage shops that has stood the test of time.

  7. I've always meant to do this but never get round to it. Though I don't own much cheap jewelry anyway... I find that if often just feels cheap despite whatever you do to it.

  8. I've never used this trick before but I am going to try it out because I love the accessory section at Forever 21!

  9. I do this to all my cheap jewelry :) It’s really smart, makes it last waay longer than if you just leave it as it is! x

  10. Ooh I used to do this to a ring I bought in Topshop a few years ago which I loveeeeed but didn't want to ruin! It's still wearable now but requires topping up every now and again :)

  11. This is a great tip, I recently chucked away a lot of dress jewellery I had because it goes funny after a while. I still now only buy something I really like, I'll bear this in mind for the future.

  14. I love using this trick! I read it on a blog somewhere a few years ago and have been using it ever since :)
