MCM // The Brand To Watch

18 October 2012

Before I moved to Korea I'd never even heard of MCM. From the day I first arrived I remember the MCM logo print catching my eye and I'd see it around every now and then. Nowadays, MCM's popularity has sky rocketed here in Korea and MCM bags are as popular and desirable as some of the top designer brands.

It's Korean owned, but began in Germany. It was bought a few years ago by a Korean woman who's working to build it into a world-recognised luxury brand. Since I live in Korea I take a particular interest in Korea-related happenings and I've noticed the brand getting more and more exposure by celebrities like Beyonce, Lady Gaga and Justin Beiber (no less!), he apparently dropped $7000 on a few items for himself and girlfriend Selena Gomez. I also heard that an MCM store just opened in Harrods in London this August. Despite all this though, some of my friends back home still haven't seen or heard of MCM.

Well known or not, I've been wanting to make an MCM purchase for a while since I love the style of their goods and the feel of the leather is so beautiful, plus, I like the Korea link. When I saw this wallet I knew it'd be my first purchase; an easier on the bank balance 'ice breaker', so to speak! You all know the hot pink interior is what really sold it to me! Next on the list is one of the Cognac Visetos bags from the Heritage Line, they're the most iconic pieces from MCM and quite timeless, I reckon they have the makings of a classic!

I hope that in thirty years I'll be proudly toting around my vintage MCM pieces and telling stories about when I lived in Korea and MCM wasn't really that famous. I'll probably enjoy a little laugh about how obscene the prices are too! ;)

I'm interested to know how popular MCM is where you are? Does anyone else like/own any MCM stuff?

  1. That is the cutest purse. I'll need to have a look in Harrods and see what pieces they've got. Never heard of this brand but if the pieces are all as pretty as the purse then i've found a new love ^_^ x

    1. Some of the pieces definitely aren't as pretty, but recently I've noticed them releasing a lot more lines like this line. Maybe a sign of good things to come... :) x

  3. I first heard of MCM through another blog and have seen a few bags on girls who are from Korea but it's definitely not a mainstream brand over here. I'm not super into logos through I do like some of their styles and your wallet is very cute!

    1. Thank you hun! No, I'm not a huge lover of logos usually, but I think with the added relevance of this being a korean brand and also because it's not, as you say, so well known as some other brands, it kind of made me like it more :) x

  6. Nope, I'd never heard of them before but the purse you chose is absolutely gorgeous. Girly and pratical, I will be checking their products out as I'm on the hunt for the perfect purse at the moment to live inside my Miu Miu. She deserves better then my well loved but tatty aging one. Hope you're feeling better xx http://essjay23x.blogspot.com

  7. I'm intrigued that this brand is new to so many of you. It has "always" been around in Central Europe and everybody in Germany and Austria (where I live) remembers it for truly ugly lines in the 1980s and 1990s. Basically, it had an image of "Wannabe LV" and was preferred by elderly people or preppy kids. They used to have a small flagship store in the city centre of Vienna, but no more. I really like the wallet you got and apparently the design has been rejuvenated (reminds me of Coach a lot) with the Korean takeover. It's definitely an advantage if you are not biased by remembering their "legacy design":-)

    1. Yes, I had heard it was around and fairly popular in the 80s but then took a dive, I'm guessing because of that legacy design, haha! Anyway, since it's relaunch it's managed to carve itself out a corner as a high-end, very popular brand here in korea and from what I hear, much of Asia too!. Hopefully they'll stay on the right track and away from the gaudy stuff I've heard they used to do! :) x

    1. Great! I'm so glad you got it and like it! I honestly, three/four weeks into having this base coat am still wearing glitter almost every day. Haha! The novelty must wear off at some point I'm sure but right now I can't see it being any time soon! :)

Hope you had a good weekend x
