Leopard Print Nail Art How To!

11 August 2011

Today's Thursday and although that's not great it does mean tomorrow's Friday which is absolutely, truly wonderful. I love Fridays and the weekend, of course. Even better, here in South Korea this weekend is a three day weekend which always get's me thinking why on earth do we have a five day weekend? That's not the balance we're supposed to have in life! Anyway, I'm hoping to get a few more posts up over the long weekend.

In the meantime, this is a quick post to show you something cool I did. I bought a black nail art pen so I thought I'd do an experimental pink leopard print design over my existing manicure. It was already late when I had this idea so I decided just to do my ring finger and the same finger on the opposite hand just to see how it looks. Then if I found I liked it I can do a full manicure when I have more time and won't mess it up when I go to sleep. Don't you just hate it when you wake up with imprints of you're bedsheets on your newly manicured fingers and toes?! It seems like no matter how long you wait it's still never long enough!

Hot pink and black leopard print nail art. My first attempt :)

I think it looks pretty good and I was surprised how easy it was to do. Here's my very simple 'how to' for leopard print nail art.
  • Start with a basic manicure (base coat and one or two coats of your chosen nail polish colour)
  • Choose a contrasting colour (if it's too similar the effect won't work well) and splodge it on in random places on your nail. It really doesn't matter about the size of these splodges or placement because leopard print isn't uniform.
  • Let the splodges dry.
  • Use a nail art pen or toothpick with nail polish (a third colour) on to draw around the splodges. Again it doesn't matter about the thickness or accuracy of this part. You can go all the way around in a loop or leave it a little open. I think leaving it partially open makes it look more like leopard print.
  • Again wait for that stage to dry.
  •  Use a top coat to finish off the look, prevent chipping and add shine.
I told you it was simple didn't I!

I actually started with a nail art pen then found that it was easier for me to use a toothpick dipped in the black polish. So, it's definitely possible to do this without needing any special tools or nail art pens. I was really surprised how nicely this turned out and I actually quite like just having one feature nail on each hand, it adds some interest and pizazz without being too much.

Goodnight everyone, I'm off to see if I can sleep on my back for the entire night now to preserve my evening accomplishments! :)
