Seoul Seeing // Gyeonbokgung, Top Cloud & Samcheongdong

2 September 2013

Once in a while a day will come along that's just so perfect in so many ways that it fills me with a happiness that lasts for weeks. This was one of those days.

Lunch with a view (and a strangely coloured Bellini)

After lunch we headed to Gyeongbokgung, one of the old Korean palaces, to walk it off. This place has such a magic about it. The grandeur and ornate details of the buildings is fascinating.
Catching some rays :)

After strolling around the palace we headed to Samcheongdong street (one of the most charming areas of Seoul)
for a little browse of the cute stores there. And then...some more food, because we hadn't had enough of that already!

I wanted after dinner coffee at the Hello Kitty Cafe. Yep, they have Hello Kitty shaped sofas in there!
Samcheondong chocolate handmade truffles
We compromised with handmade truffles and iced chocolate in 'Cacao Boom'. I think I still won, they were divine. After this we headed home, tired but full up on love, happiness and a heck of a lot of food! Haha!

As wonderful as this day was, I'm left with a bittersweet feeling because the time has come to move on. In just two months we won't be in Korea anymore! We'll be saying goodbye to this incredible county, our friends and our beautiful home and moving to Jakarta, Indonesia for the Mr's new job. Of course, we're so excited about moving, ready for the challenges and new experiences it will bring and really eager to get settled into a new life there. But still...Korea has been our home for over four years and it's truly going to be sad to have to say goodbye.

Since an end to our stay here is imminent, we're planning to spend the next few weeks trying to pack in as many sightseeing adventures as possible and final visits to some of our favourite spots. Believe it or not there's still a couple of the touristy sights that we're yet to see here. It's funny, but somehow when you live in a city, you can end up seeing less of those things than you would do if you were just passing through quickly. Anyway, they're on our list and we're going to play tourists so we can say we saw it all.

I know that in the next few weeks I'll also be swamped with moving preperations, (just sorting through the clothes I've accumulated here feels like it could take me until Christmas, I kid you not!) but I'll do my best to keep you updated with our move and blog as often as possible.

If anyone has been to Jakarta, or even better lived/lives there I'd love to hear your tips and recommendations!

  1. I've lived almost everywhere in SEA and East Asia in general and I don't mean to dampen your spirits but Jakarta really isn't anything compared to Seoul. Jakarta is polluted and still quite dirty and inconvenient. You too would have probably been spoiled by Seoul. There really isn't any better places to live in Asia than Seoul or Tokyo. Savour Seoul while you can!

    1. Yes, Seoul is incredible! We've loved our time here but a bit of a change will be fun too, even if it does turn out to be a bit more of a challenge! We've visited quite a lot of places in South East Asia too (including Indonesia) so at least we know roughly what we're getting ourselves into. No doubt we'll pay Korea a few visits in the future still too :)

    1. Yes, I'm really going to miss it, can't believe my time here is ending, it's sort of surreal after being here over four years! But, I am excited to go see a new country and get to know a new city too, so at least that balances out the sad feelings! :)

  10. I've lived in Jakarta for 11 years, mostly as a child, but be sure to have some form of sun protection (whether it be sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, etc) on you at all times! The sun there (combined with the humidity, and the smog) can be very unbearable! Bring lots of bottled water everywhere you go (it can be a tad sketchy to buy them off the streets, and too pricey to buy at supermarket) so you can stay hydrated!

Have tons of fun in Jakarta! Beyond the traffic, and the (occasional unbearable) temperature, it's a really amazing place where people are super kind and there's lots to see and do! Best of luck with the move :)

  14. How exciting to move to a new place and experience another city! I have never personally been there, my Dad did work out there for 4 weeks a good few years back now but he didn't get much free time to explore! One of my best friends is moving at the end of this month to a little island in Indonesia but I'm not sure which one! She's going to be there for 6 months maybe you'll bump into her!

  24. OMG! I'm just catching up on all of this now!!! This is HUGE NEWS. Are you excited? I've been to Jakarta a few times and like one of the ladies above said it's a bit dirty and haphazard in places BUT, the food is amazing and the shopping is great! The hotels are amazing and once you get out outside the city the scenery is amazing. How long will you be there for? Do you know which part you'll be living in? Eeeeek so many questions!!! xx
